Lindas Book Obsession Review of “The Moral Compass” by K A ServianI have been captivated by “The Moral Compass” by K A Servian. The story is set in 1853, when Florence is writing in her diary during a terrible episode of seasickness on the ship set from London to New Zealand. After her father’s embarrassing scandal, Florence, her father and brother are set to make a new life in New Zealand on a farm. During the travel, Florence’s father dies, leaving an 18 year old Florence and her brother to fend for themselves.
After being brought up in the lap of luxury, Florence is taken aback by the condition of the farmland that her father had purchased. Florence also had to leave the man she loves behind as she goes on this journey, only hoping he will find her.
The genres for this book are Fiction and Historical Fiction. There is a second book that completes this series.
The author describes the characters as complicated and complex due to the circumstances. Florence is strong- willed, brave, courageous, and hardworking, although at every turn she faces adversity. Florence’s brother is lazy and has an entitled feeling. He seems to care only about himself.
I appreciate the author’s descriptive writing style, and the layers in the story. How will Florence manage to survive? What choices does Florence have?
Florence is forced to make choices. Times are difficult. Florence does show growth in her character, and seems to learn to adapt, but at what cost?
I would highly recommend this book to readers that appreciate Historical Fiction, Women’s Fiction, and a complicated journey. I received an Advanced Reading Copy of this novel for my honest review. I can’t wait to read K A Servian’s next book.

THE MORAL COMPASS by K A Servian
Florence Thackeray and her brother, Bertram bordered a ship with their father after he decided that they should move to New Zealand and this is in 1853 and that they need to make a fresh start. Florence, Bertram and their father came from England.
Along the way tragedy strikes and now only Florence and her brother will now be the only ones getting back off the ship.
What happens, well Florence has no idea how to do much of anything as they always had maids or servants. She has learned to live like a Princess attending parties and balls. Bertram knows how to drink, gamble and basically lose everything.
This story will take you through their trials and tribulations and as they stumble around. Hoping you will find Book One as enjoyable as I have and we wait for the next one in the series Shaking The Tree.
Following a scandal that has seen them travel half way across the world, Florence and her hapless brother, Bertram, find themselves alone, orphaned and penniless. ‘Everything she had taken for granted their beautiful home, her many books, a cupboard overflowing with silk gowns, delicious food, being warm, clean and secure were all gone.’
A potential way out of their dire situation is offered by trader and shop owner, Jack Cameron, but it involves a course of action that Florence, or any other woman, would be reluctant to take. However, it soon becomes clear that there is no alternative. The man Florence loved is far away in England and unlikely to consider her a good marriage prospect now.
As things turn out, Florence’s worst fears are not realised and, for a time, she glimpses the possibility of happiness and even fulfilment. Unfortunately, others have different plans. Enter a good old-fashioned villain! From that point on, events conspire to thwart the happiness Florence has found, including ships that almost literally pass in the night!
I particularly liked how the reader sees Florence develop as a character from naïve, cosseted girl, totally unprepared for the life into which she has been thrust, to mature, principled young woman. Along the way she learns that what’s important in life is not airs and graces, the rules of etiquette or one’s position in society, but how you treat others. If you like, through her experiences, Florence learns how to orientate her ‘moral compass’ to true North. The message of the book is that people shouldn’t be judged based on their social status (or lack of it), their appearance or their race but by their actions and their values. A message we could do well heed to today.
The setting of the book was one of the things that attracted to me to it and I enjoyed some of the early scenes which give a sense of the natural beauty of New Zealand and the culture of the native Maoris. Personally, I would have welcomed more of this local colour. However, I was captivated by the story and the ending definitely left me wanting to find out what happens next.
Florence goes from having all the luxuries imaginable to having nothing. Her life is full of heartbreak as she struggles to merely survive in a faraway land. A beautiful love story.
Full of interesting characters doing the best they can with the choices made by and for them. Great insight into early NZ life. Looking forward to the sequel.
I love New Zealand, and had hopes of this novel being something more than a predictable, silly romance. The story line is quite dumb, the main female character is feeble and useless; she doesn't seem capable of learning any practical skills. The characters go on misunderstanding each other so much that it's ridiculous. I was hoping for something more realistic but this is really awful. I'm sorry I wasted my money.
