The Silver Chalice Loyola Classics Thomas Costain Amy Welborn Peggy Noonan 9780829423501 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. It is quite lengthy, but I like long books, so I didn't mind. It had everything...love, suspense, faith, history, meaning. So much happened in the first hundred pages that I couldn't wait to find out what's next. Keep in mind that this involves the early Christian era, so don't read it if you'd be offended by that. Otherwise, enjoy it for the story that it is.
I have read this book several times over the years so bought it for my kindle. This is historical fiction with a main character that is unforgettable. The story progresses over years of his life as an artist who makes a chalice to hold the cup Jesus drank out of at the last supper. Wonderfully written.
I loved it. Had seen the movie when I was younger and was always fascinated with Joseph of Aramethea and the strength and faith he and Deborah always maintained and lived in spite of much adversity. I suspect many face the doubts that Basil experienced but had their eyes opened to the awesomeness of true faith. He fulfilled his destination. The CUP lives!
I read The Silver Chalice for the first time when I was about thirteen years old. The book totally absorbed me, and I could not put it down until I finished. Not being one to re-read any books, I read The Silver Chalice again when I was in my thirties. Now in my fifties, I'm ready to read it again. I'm sure that I have never read a book three times; therefore, I believe this must be my all-time favorite book! The plot is so realistic that, as I read this clever and suspenseful novel, I feel as if I am living in the early years of Christianity, with all of the intrigue of slaves, apostles, and Roman oppression.
I bought this after reading The Black Rose. This follows the same format - based on an old legend and incorporating historical figures with a romantic sub-plot. It was an interesting story and I enjoyed it but The Black Rose was better, in my opinion.
This book is the story of a young man striving to understand the Crucifiction, and what it means to those who trust Jesus. And, although it seeks a physical connection to the Truth of God's love, it shows how much more important it is to find an emotional and spiritual connection instead. It is a deep and invasive book, though the movie is much less so. It can truly open your heart to the love of God in Jesus Christ.
I love historical and Biblical epics, both in print and on the screen. This novel does not disappoint. Although it is an old book, it is a classic. It is particularly meaningful for Christians, an insight into the often grim circumstances of persecution and brutality early believers faced. The characters are well drawn, the action cinematic, altogether an absorbing read. Although the ending is a bit disappointing (whatever DID happen to the chalice?), it is definitely worthwhile reading; buy it.
